developing Core requirement

Transcripts Findable

Group: images-and-media • Guideline: transcripts

Summary in Plain English

The transcript sits next to the audio or video it belongs to, not on a separate page someone has to hunt for. Media with no spoken dialogue, decorative media and labelled text alternatives are exempt.

Why It Matters

A transcript nobody can find is not an alternative. Adjacency is what makes it a real choice at the moment the media is encountered.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/images-and-media/transcripts/transcripts-findable.md.

Except when

  • The audio or video content has no spoken dialogue.
  • The audio or video is decorative.
  • The media is already a media alternative for text and is clearly labeled as such.
