โš ๏ธ W3C Working Draft Notice

WCAG 3.0 is an active W3C Working Draft in development by the AGWG. Requirements, assertions, the conformance model and reporting tiers are still being developed and may change. The latest published draft is the 10 September 2026 Working Draft; this site follows the editorsโ€™ draft, which also includes exploratory provisions.

developing Core requirement

Simple Pointer Input Available

Group: input-operation • Guideline: pointer-input

Summary in Plain English

Anything you can do with a complex pointer input - multi-finger, multi-point, path-based - can also be done with a simple pointer input, or a series of them that does not depend on timing.

Why It Matters

Multi-point and timed gestures are unavailable to people using a head pointer, switch, stylus or single finger, and to anyone whose movements are slow or imprecise.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/input-operation/pointer-input/simple-pointer-input-available.md.

Notes in the draft

Complex pointer inputs are not banned, but they cannot be the only way to accomplish an action.

Simple pointer input is different than single pointer input and is more restrictive than simply using a single pointer.

Examples from the Draft

Worked examples the W3C editors wrote into the provision itself, not examples invented here.

Complex pointer inputs include but are not limited to:

  • double clicks
  • dragging movements
  • swipe gestures
  • multipoint gestures such as pinching, split tap, or two-finger rotor
  • variable pressure or timing
