WCAG 3.0 is an active W3C Working Draft in development by the AGWG. Requirements, assertions, the conformance model and reporting tiers are still being developed and may change. developing Core requirement

Pointer Pressure Not Relied On

Group: input-operation • Guideline: pointer-input

Summary in Plain English

Requiring a particular pointer pressure - a force press, for instance - cannot be the only way to do something, unless that pressure is essential.

Why It Matters

Pressure-sensitive input assumes controlled force, which is not available to people with weakness, tremor, or those using a head pointer, stylus or switch.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/input-operation/pointer-input/pointer-pressure-not-relied-on.md.

Except when

  • Specific pressure is essential to the functionality.

Examples from the Draft

Worked examples the W3C editors wrote into the provision itself, not examples invented here.

Specific pressure would be essential to a paintbrush feature or advanced signature verification.
