WCAG 3.0 is an active W3C Working Draft in development by the AGWG. Requirements, assertions, the conformance model and reporting tiers are still being developed and may change. developing Supplemental requirement

No Time Limits

Group: process-and-task-completion • Guideline: adequate-time

Summary in Plain English

Completing a process does not involve time limits, unless a limit is essential.

Why It Matters

Time limits assume a typical speed of reading, typing and decision-making. People using screen readers, switch input or voice, and people with cognitive disabilities, routinely need longer.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/process-and-task-completion/adequate-time/no-time-limits.md.

Except when

  • the time limit is essential.

Notes in the draft

Implying to a user that they will lose a benefit if they donโ€™t act immediately is not an essential time limit.

Examples from the Draft

Worked examples the W3C editors wrote into the provision itself, not examples invented here.

Essential time limits would include but are not limited to auctions, ticket sales, or timed exams.
