โš ๏ธ W3C Working Draft Notice

WCAG 3.0 is an active W3C Working Draft in development by the AGWG. Requirements, assertions, the conformance model and reporting tiers are still being developed and may change. The latest published draft is the 10 September 2026 Working Draft; this site follows the editorsโ€™ draft, which also includes exploratory provisions.

exploratory Supplemental requirement

No Artificial Time Limits

Group: process-and-task-completion • Guideline: avoid-deception

Summary in Plain English

An exploratory requirement: completing a process does not involve artificial time limits - countdowns manufactured to create urgency - unless the limit is essential.

Why It Matters

Manufactured urgency pushes people into decisions before they have understood them, and hits hardest anyone who needs longer to read or decide.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/process-and-task-completion/avoid-deception/no-artificial-time-limits.md.

Except when

  • The time limit is essential.

Examples from the Draft

Worked examples the W3C editors wrote into the provision itself, not examples invented here.

Essential time limits would include but are not limited to auctions, ticket sales, or timed exams.
