โš ๏ธ W3C Working Draft Notice

WCAG 3.0 is an active W3C Working Draft in development by the AGWG. Requirements, assertions, the conformance model and reporting tiers are still being developed and may change. The latest published draft is the 10 September 2026 Working Draft; this site follows the editorsโ€™ draft, which also includes exploratory provisions.

exploratory Supplemental requirement

Image Types Identified

Group: images-and-media • Guideline: image-alternatives

Summary in Plain English

An exploratory requirement: the type of an image is indicated - a photo, a chart, an illustration. Images that are links, buttons, or purely decorative are exempt.

Why It Matters

Knowing the kind of image sets expectations about what the alternative will contain and whether a longer description is worth seeking out.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/images-and-media/image-alternatives/image-types-identified.md.

Except when

  • An image is a link or a part of a link.
  • An image is a button or a part of a button.
  • An image is purely decorative (such as an icon used alongside text, or a thumbnail image within a link).
