developing Core requirement

Human Language Detectable

Group: text-and-wording • Guideline: text-to-speech

Summary in Plain English

The human language of everything in the view can be determined programmatically - unless no language tag exists for it in the ISO register, or the technology cannot indicate language at all.

Why It Matters

Screen readers choose pronunciation rules from the language tag. Untagged or mistagged text is read in the wrong accent and is often incomprehensible.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/text-and-wording/text-to-speech/human-language-detectable.md.

Except when

  • A language tag is not available in [[iso-639-2023]], or
  • The technology used to create the view does not support indicating languages.
