developing Core requirement

Graphical Object Contrast Sufficient

Group: images-and-media • Guideline: single-sense

Summary in Plain English

The parts of a graphic you need in order to understand it must meet a minimum contrast ratio. Where a particular presentation is essential to the information itself, the requirement does not apply.

Why It Matters

Icons, chart lines and diagram strokes carry meaning the same way text does. At low contrast that meaning disappears for people with low vision, and for anyone on a dim or glare-hit screen.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/images-and-media/single-sense/graphical-object-contrast-sufficient.md.

Except when

  • a particular presentation of graphical objects is essential to the information being conveyed.
