developing Core requirement

Focus Indicator Contrast Sufficient

Group: interactive-components • Guideline: keyboard-focus-appearance

Summary in Plain English

Where a custom focus indicator replaces the browser default, it has to have sufficient contrast against what is next to it and sufficient change of contrast from the unfocused state.

Why It Matters

An indicator that cannot be distinguished from the background tells a sighted keyboard user nothing about where they are on the page.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/interactive-components/keyboard-focus-appearance/focus-indicator-contrast-sufficient.md.

Applies when

  • the user agentโ€™s default focus indicator is replaced by a custom focus indicator.
