Eye Tracking Not Relied On

Group: input-operation • Guideline: input-operation

Summary in Plain English

Content and functionality cannot rely solely on eye tracking, unless eye tracking is essential.

Why It Matters

Eye tracking assumes steady, controllable gaze. Nystagmus, strabismus, low vision and blindness all make it unreliable or impossible.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/input-operation/input-operation/eye-tracking-not-relied-on.md.

Except when

  • Eye tracking is essential.

Notes in the draft

This is primarily aimed at ensuring there is an alternative for people who cannot use eye tracking (but do have sight) due to eye conditions.

Some platforms may only allow eye tracking. Ideally the platforms allow additional mechanisms for control.
