Error Messages Collocated

Group: error-handling • Guideline: correct-errors

Summary in Plain English

An error message about user input either appears next to the input it concerns, or focus moves to the message and there is a way to get from the message back to the field in error.

Why It Matters

An error announced far from the field it belongs to can be missed entirely by someone using magnification, and leaves screen reader users to hunt for which field is wrong.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/error-handling/correct-errors/error-messages-collocated.md.

Applies when

  • Error messages relate to user input.
