Blocks of content available (enhanced)
Group: layout • Guideline: structure
Summary in Plain English
Styling is used to strengthen the visual separation between meaningful blocks of content.
Why It Matters
Clear visual grouping is how readers find their way without reading everything, and it is what keeps a page navigable when magnified or reflowed.
Test Procedure from the W3C Draft
Quoted from the provision's informative document, informative/guidelines/layout/structure/blocks-of-content-available-enhanced.md. It is the group's own procedure, not an editorial testing guide.
Visually identifiable meaningful blocks of content
Procedure
For each meaningful block of content in the page/view:
- Check that each meaningful block of content is grouped by one or more of the following characteristics:
- Color or lightness โ the same color scheme is used (Note that this should also meet requirements for โColor aloneโ and โContrastโ)
- Borders โ blocks are contained within the same borders
- Spacing โ blocks are grouped based on their proximity to others within the same area, while spacing is used to separate different sections of content
- Font โ blocks are presented with similar font families
- Position โ blocks are located in the same area of the page/view (for example, header, navigation, footer)
- Repeated visual feature โ blocks contain a consistent visual feature (for example, bullets in a list, checkbox)
Expected results
- #1 is true.
