developing Core requirement

Audio Shifting Adjustable

Group: animation-and-movement • Guideline: avoid-physical-harm

Summary in Plain English

Audio that pans or shifts between channels to simulate movement must be something a user can pause or switch off. It does not apply when the shifting comes from the operating system or the browser rather than from the content.

Why It Matters

Simulated motion in sound can provoke nausea, disorientation or vestibular symptoms, and it makes speech harder to follow for people who process audio with one ear or with a hearing aid.

Scope: When This Applies

The draft's own conditions, quoted from guidelines/groups/animation-and-movement/avoid-physical-harm/audio-shifting-adjustable.md.

Applies when

  • content includes audio shifting.

Except when

  • operating system or user agent triggers audio shifting.
